The American Bar Association Section on Civil Rights and Social Justice hosted a webinar for its membership featuring moderator Deena Hurwitz and speakers Prof. David Kaye (UC Irvine Law), Jamil Dakwar (ACLU) and Prof. Martha Davis (Northeastern Law School) to outline the case for an NHRI in the United States.
To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Association of Official Human Rights Agencies (IAOHRA) held a webinar with Ambassador Rodrigo Carazo from the United Nations Human Rights Committee, Lisa Borden from the Southern Poverty Law Center, and Dr. Alissa Warren, President of IAOHRA to discuss the critical need for establishing an National Human Rights Institution (NHRI) in the United States, international human rights implementation strategies, and the important advocacy work at the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland.
In the first Congressional briefing on the implementation of human rights in the US since 2017, Pilar Herrero (Center for Reproductive Rights), Laura Williamson (Southern Poverty Law Center), and Jamil Dakwar (ACLU) reported back about the recent UN review of US compliance with the ICCPR, with Vanessa Griddine-Jones (Congressional Black Caucus Institute). The discussion included a call for an NHRI in the US as well as important opening remarks about an NHRI from Congressman James McGovern (D-MA).
Southern Poverty Law Center Senior Policy Counsel for International Advocacy spoke at the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe's Warsaw Human Dimension Conference in October 2023 about the need for an NHRI in the United States.
In October, 2023, the UN Human Rights Committee reviewed US compliance with its commitments under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). Prior to the start of the official review, the US delegation met with civil society to discuss issues of the review. Dr. Alissa Warren, President of IOAHRA, spoke about the need for an NHRI.
