U.N. Review of United States Implementation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights: Challenges and Strategies for Progress

The United Nations Human Rights Committee recently completed its periodic review of U.S. compliance with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). This congressional briefing will provide a report back from the review, covering US participation and the Committee’s recommendations on key issues including the priority topics selected by the Committee for a follow-up report: voting rights, freedom of assembly, and reproductive rights. Panelists will also discuss strategies for improving US implementation of its international human rights treaty obligations, such as the establishment of a National Human Rights Institution (NHRI). Implementation of several key recommendations would require action by Congress.
